About Lake Kournas
Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete and one of the island’s most peaceful destinations. Located between Chania and Rethymno, it is surrounded by green hills and mountains, creating a beautiful natural setting that attracts visitors throughout the year.
The lake is an important protected habitat, home to freshwater turtles, ducks and many bird species. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the clear water, rent a pedal boat or simply relax at one of the lakeside cafés while taking in the stunning scenery. On calm days, the surrounding mountains are reflected on the water, creating a truly picturesque landscape.

Lake Kournas is beautiful throughout the year, with the most popular months being May through October. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors.
The area offers cafés, traditional tavernas, sunbeds, small shops and pedal boat rentals during the tourist season.
Bring comfortable clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and a camera. If you plan to rent a pedal boat, don't forget your sunglasses and water.
Free and paid parking areas are available close to the lake, making it easy to access on foot.
