About Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge is one of the most famous natural attractions in Crete and one of the longest gorges in Europe. Stretching approximately 16 kilometers through the White Mountains National Park, it offers visitors an unforgettable hiking experience surrounded by towering cliffs, forests and breathtaking scenery.

The gorge is home to a unique ecosystem and protected wildlife, including the famous Cretan wild goat, known as the Kri-Kri. The hike ends at the picturesque coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where visitors can relax by the Libyan Sea after completing one of Greece’s most iconic walking trails.

Samaria Gorge is usually open from May to October, depending on weather conditions. Spring is especially beautiful, with flowing water and lush vegetation, while autumn offers cooler temperatures for hiking.

The hike covers approximately 16 km and usually takes 5 to 7 hours to complete. A good level of fitness is recommended, as the route includes rocky and uneven terrain.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes and comfortable clothing. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat and a light backpack. Trekking poles can also be helpful for the descent.

Rest areas, drinking water points and toilets are available at several locations along the trail. Small cafés and restaurants can be found in Agia Roumeli after completing the hike.
