White Mountains (Lefka Ori)

White Mountains Mountokalis Transfers Chania Crete

About the White Mountains

The White Mountains, known locally as Lefka Ori, are the largest mountain range in Crete and one of the island’s most spectacular natural landmarks. Stretching across western Crete, the range features more than 50 peaks rising above 2,000 metres, with Pachnes standing as the highest summit at 2,453 metres.

The mountains earned their name because they remain snow-covered during winter, while in summer the bright limestone rocks create the impression of white peaks. Throughout history, this rugged landscape served as a natural fortress during many Cretan revolutions. Today, the White Mountains are home to rare wildlife, including the famous Kri-Kri wild goat, golden eagles and numerous endemic plant species.
